A disease that I would be interested in further investigating that I already have a little bit of background knowledge on it Parkinson’s disease. Some of my work BCM 341 was related to Parkinson’s disease and thinking about possible methods of prevention and treatment of this disease. However my previous research related to this disease was on the protein level, so I think it would be interesting to find out more about this disease when investigating on the genetic level.
Another disease that I think would be interesting to investigate on the genetic level is Marfan’s syndrome. While I recall learning about this disease somewhat in entry level science classes and perhaps even in BIO 220, I really don’t know too much about how this disease works, outside of the symptoms that it causes. Learning more about the genetics of this disease and how it causes that symptoms that we see could be intriguing.
The third disease that I was thinking about doing further investigation on is cystic fibrosis. During my freshman and sophomore seasons at Muhlenberg, the lacrosse team partnered with Team Impact, an organization that matches kids with life-threatening diseases up with sports team, and essentially allows the kids to be apart of the team. Our team’s newest member happened to be Lucas, an 8 year old who was suffering from cystic fibrosis. I think it would be cool to learn more about cystic fibrosis, so perhaps I could better understand what Lucas is going through, and how he is being effected genetically.
